Coping with the stress of quitting smoking

December 18th, 2007 · No Comments

The urge for someone to smoke can stem from any emotional need or any behavioral pattern. The need to smoke can be triggered by anger, joy or any emotion, or just a cup of coffee after which one wants to smoke. Over all these factors stress seems to be one of the biggest causes that trigger the need to smoke. Smoking creates stress but most people think that it alleviates stress and that is why smokers have an urge to smoke when they are thinking or are under any kind of pressure or stress.

The euphoria that nicotine creates in our brain is only short lived and the stress hits back harder and stronger thus developing into a vicious cycle of sorts. So quitting smoking can create a stress of its own because of the lack of access to nicotine for the body and brain. Nicotine withdrawal can be taxing and stressful. When you quit smoking the first few days or weeks are the hardest. Not only are you depriving your body of the effects of nicotine but you are also trying to shake off a habit that has been part of your daily life for years. All these can add up to the stress and create an urge to smoke. Tackling this stress effectively can mean a difference between being a smoker and a non-smoker.

Eat well and exercise better. Drink ample amount of fluids so as to be able to flush your system of all the toxic pile up. Small things like taking a long walk or relaxing with a warm bath or doing things like getting a good massage and so on can divert your mind from smoking. Try and avoid caffeine. It can trigger the urge to smoke. There are other things you could do to divert your mind and these may vary from person to person, watch a movie, read a good book or take out some family time. Taking a multivitamin supplement and eating healthy is also the key. There will be times when you find it hard to resist the urge to smoke that is when you will have to try and occupy yourself and divert your mind completely from the thought and this will help you while the urge lasts.

Lastly it is in your hands to work out the strategies to be smoke free and your will power to remain so.
