The smell of smoke seems to cling to everything that is in the vicinity. People living with a smoker or smoking know full well how horrible this smell can be. The smell seems to stick to everything without leaving it. This could be a hard to deal with but there are some simple methods that can help one with the cleaning process to remove the smoke smell that permeates your house, car or anywhere.
Vinegar is a good cleanser. Smoke odor is caused by the presence of resins and tar that come from burning tobacco and vinegar is known to cut through these, making it a great way to clean any surface that has these odors. It might not be good on fabric. The smell of vinegar will linger for a while but it soon diminishes with time as opposed to smoke odor.
Steam cleaning the carpet is a good way to get rid of the smoke odor on your carpets. There a lot of local stores that rent out steam cleaners, you can get one of those and steam clean your carpet or you can hire one of the carpet cleaning services to come and do this for you. Either way shampooing your carpet will help remove the smoke odor from it.
Dusting your carpet with baking soda and allowing it some time (like two or three days) to absorb the smoke smell and then vacuuming it can help remove the smoke smell from your carpet if you have not tried steam vacuuming it already. Try and use a scented baking soda powder to work through this odor.
If your house has a lot of shades and curtains then try and clean them out or get new shades. Wash the curtains and try and clean the light fixtures and ceiling fans as these can also accumulate resin and tar over the years. Airing out the house is a good option since there is nothing better than clean air.
There are quite a number of products that are available on the market that help combat the smoke smell. Products that contain strong smells but are without any cleaning agent will not work in helping you remove the smoke odor from your home. When purchasing a product either look for an activated charcoal in the ingredients as this is an effective absorbent for removing odor and also if the product has some odor absorbing chemicals like baking soda products or charcoal that can help absorb the odor.
