Tobacco has a lot of health affects. The addiction to nicotine can have so many bad byproducts in the form of health disorders. The carcinogenic affects of tobacco are well documented but apart from this there are a host of other diseases that smoking can bring along like, emphysema, respiratory disorders due to the effect it has on lungs, cardiac problems and any number of cancers.
It is believed that the addiction can cut short the lifespan of a smoker by 10 years as compared to his non-smoking counterpart. The addiction to nicotine is comparable to the addiction to drugs like heroin. Despite the awareness of the health hazards smoking provides, the smokers are unable to control their urge to smoke because of the addictive affect nicotine has on them.
Chronic pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the primary diseases that affects smokers and can have symptoms of shortness of breath, wheezing, cough and emphysema, with irreparable damage to the lungs. Carbon monoxide that is a byproduct of smoking can affect the blood’s capacity to carry oxygen to the heart and constant exposure to this can affect the heart. Carbon monoxide binds better with blood cells than oxygen and is more stable thus leading to a loss in the functionality of the blood cell. Narrowing of blood vessels, can lead to poor circulation and finally to heart disease, which is quite common among smokers.
As with any other habit like alcoholism and drug abuse, the affects of nicotine vary with the individual, the amount that they smoke and so on. Pregnant women who smoke have a higher risk of endangering the infant’s life as also making their body vulnerable to cancer and other coronary or pulmonary problems.
Smoking inadvertently damages the lungs and for the effects to fully manifest into the lungs in the form of cancer may take a period of time depending on the extent of the smoker’s addiction to the habit. Lung cancer, myocardial infraction and pulmonary diseases are common in smokers.
