Methods of quitting smoking for pregnant women

December 18th, 2007 · No Comments

Smoking is bad by itself for the smoker as well as for the people around them. Smoking can lead to serious illnesses for everyone and more so for infants and children. Children and infants are prone to respiratory disorders, asthma and such if they are exposed to smoke as their immune systems are fragile and yet in the developmental stages.

If that is the case for children and infants, just imagine the kind of impact smoking can have on an unborn child or a fetus. The hazardous effects smoking can have on an unborn child can be anything from respiratory disorders right up to deformities and poor development.

Trying to quit smoking when one is pregnant maybe a good decision but care has to be taken to see that the method one opts for should take into consideration the effect it will have on the growing fetus.  For this probably quitting cold turkey is the healthiest option since it allows the cleansing process without adding any medications or with the help of nicotine replacement treatment.

The cravings can be really hard but the withdrawal symptoms that you feel may not affect the baby. This is good news, but trying to stay nicotine free for the first few weeks maybe harder than one expects especially for women who smoke heavily. If the woman is a heavy smoker then it might be a good idea to gradually phase out the habit rather than just quitting abruptly. Those women who smoke heavily are at a risk for seizures and quitting abruptly may cause a seizure. So in such cases it might be good to try and reduce the number of cigarettes slowly.

If you are pregnant and are finding it hard to quit then you might ask your doctor to suggest alternative methods that will not only help you but also not harm the baby. The sooner one gets out of this habit the better for the baby and for them.
