Nicotine withdrawal symptoms and how severe can they be

December 18th, 2007 · No Comments

Some of the most talked about and worrisome issues of quitting smoking are the withdrawal symptoms. They can be especially hard to deal with and severe in the first few days after you quit smoking. This is the phase where a person buckles under the pressure and cannot take the effect of the symptoms any more and so reverts back to smoking to ease the pain.

Nicotine is a very addictive substance and can be easily absorbed by the body and goes into the blood stream at a rapid rate. As the body receives more it craves for more and thus the habit gets progressively worse.

When a person decides to quit he/she should be aware of what they will be facing. Being aware of the symptoms before hand and trying to take stock to prepare for this can be a good thing for the person and can help them face it with caution and care. The most commonly reported symptoms of withdrawal can be anywhere from nausea, dizziness and headache to constipation, insomnia and frustration.

Coping with these symptoms can be hard and involves a lot of work. Trying to circumvent this phase can be made easier with a few common sense tips. Try drinking a lot of water or fluids. This way the body can flush out the toxins that have accumulated while you were a smoking. Try and delay your urge and wait for a few minutes before the strength of the cravings wane. Distracting your mind, when the urge hits, can be one method of trying to score a winning point in this battle.  Apart from these, exercising, taking vitamin supplements, trying out healthy sleep habits, relaxation techniques and breathing techniques can take you a long way. Trying to do activities that are not triggers to an urge to smoke can be a good way of diverting your energy into other channels.

Quitting is harder than getting hooked to the habit but if you approach it with the right attitude and the will power, then this should not be as much of a problem as you may think. But there is always that chance that you may retract on this path. Working towards a smoke free life can be a lifelong battle the first few months or years are the hardest. If you keep that in mind then it may help make the quitting easier.
