Primary and secondary smokers and asthma

December 18th, 2007 · No Comments

Smoking can lead to a host of respiratory disorders like Chronic Bronchitis, Emphysema and COPD and Lung cancer and many more. Smoking damages the lungs and every little cell that works to make our breathing easy and effortless. Each breath that a person takes involves innumerable cells working to transfer the oxygen that we breathe in to the blood and retrieving the carbon dioxide from the blood cells which translates into exhaling. People with asthma have trouble with breathing when they have an attack because asthmatics have poor air way operation and the air passages swell and constrict easy flow of air to and from the lungs. Smoking damages the air passages and the lungs in much the same way as an asthma attack so if one is asthmatic and they also smoke them, can bring on the attacks at a higher frequency in a compounded manner with little help even from medication.

If you smoke and you have asthma then the frequency and the severity of the flare ups can be higher. At the same time you are putting your Asthma treatment at risk. Regular medication may not work and more so coughing due to this inflamed air passages can lead to less sleep or insomnia and can effect your over all well being.

Primary smokers with asthma are not the only ones at risk for asthma flare ups. Even second hand smoking can trigger an asthma attack. So when smoking you is not only harming your body but also that of the others unwittingly. If you are in a public place and there is a smoker then you should probably move to a non-smoking area. Apart from the fact that you cannot control someone’s habit of smoking, it can help you to some extent if you stress on your family and friends for a need to have a smoke free atmosphere around you if you are asthmatic. Otherwise your frequency of attacks and severity will increase with no aid from regular medicines. There maybe a need to increase your medicine dose and the doctor visits may also be compounded.
