Protecting yourself and your family from the hazards of passive smoking

December 18th, 2007 · No Comments

Passive smoking is equally hazardous to a person’s health as is active smoking. Smoke exhaled or derived from a cigarette can linger in the air for a considerable amount of time even after the smoker has left or finished smoking. The amount of chemical compounds that smoking creates also permeates the air surrounding the area where the smoker was present and can affect those who inhale that air.

Smoking is one of the leading causes of diseases like lung cancer, heart problems, respiratory disorders both is adults and in children. The best methods to adopt so as to make sure that you are not a passive smoker is to try and avoid being around the smoker or trying to avoid the area where he/she smoked.

Some of the common place precautions to take while ensuring your family is not exposed to this air are to see that the smoker does not do so in the house. Making sure that people, that smoke, do not do so around you or your infants is important. Children are especially vulnerable to the bad affects of the smoke.

If someone smokes in the house then try to air the room out as much as possible to make sure that the smoke leaden air is circulated in the house. Try and help people who are trying to quit and encourage them in their effort. Smoking in closed airs can leave the air thick with the bad byproducts of the smoke like hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, so if you have to try and smoke in open areas and not closed rooms. These small measures can help ease a few of the problems that are associated with primary or second hand smoking for the benefit of the family members.
