Quitting smoking when you are pregnant

December 18th, 2007 · No Comments

Smoking is not good any time, but smoking when you are pregnant is really unhealthy. Not only is it bad for you but also for the developing fetus. Trying to quit smoking can be really hard when you are pregnant.  There are a lot of things to consider when you are trying to quit smoking and one of the primary things to take into account is the method one is going to adopt when trying to quit.

If you are pregnant and decide to quit smoking then probably quitting cold turkey is one of the best methods. But with the known success rate and the amount of effort that goes in to this it might not be a good route to take. If you are trying to quit and want to use a patch or any other method of easing off on your nicotine cravings it might be a good idea. While trying to use any method that has the nicotine replacement therapy is good since it does not come with all the hazardous chemicals that come with a cigarette, it might be good to evaluate your ability to control your nicotine cravings at this time.

Pregnancy is a time when the woman’s body is undergoing a tremendous amount of change and the hormones are working round the clock.  While this may not be the time to take on the added burden of trying to quit it is never too early to quit smoking. If you are trying to take any medication or other therapy like the laser treatment or the injection, it is better to consult your gynecologist before you do so. Any medication that you take can also affect the growing fetus.

If you tried quitting but did not succeed it might help a little if you at least try and cut back on the number of cigarettes you smoke. Whatever the method one chooses it is a good thing to quit at the earliest if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant or are nursing. The nicotine can travel from your blood stream directly into the growing child’s and can result in physical or developmental deformities. Not only is the child effected but with all the effort your body is making to provide a nice growing atmosphere for the growing fetus for the next 9 months, it is taking a battering from this nicotine addiction and can adversely effect your health leaving you vulnerable to various diseases like respiratory disorders, cancer, heart disease and so on.  To work out what is best for you talk to your doctor and see if you can find a way to quit smoking if you have not had good results trying the cold turkey method.
