Adolescence is a tough enough age without adding the addiction of nicotine to their list of problems. Teen smoking is on the rise and no amount of information on the health hazards helps these children since they really do not realize the impact of these warnings. For a teenager who smokes it is an issue of style and class or a chance to show his or her peers that they are cool.
Smokers are, more likely than not, people who have started smoking when they were teenagers. Smoking is not a habit most people pick up after their teenage years. The reason being that after 20 a person is able to decide what is right or wrong for them with a clearer perception than when they were a teenager. Peer pressure at this age is not an issue to since most people that age can stand up to that.
Teenagers do not understand that smoking is an easy habit to pick up which brings with it a host of health problems and not only that, most people who start smoking early find it hard or find it nearly impossible to quit. They might be able to sustain a smoke free life for a while but are sure to relapse and those who have not had a relapse face an eternal struggle to stay smoke free for the rest of their lives. Is that not time wasted where you could use all those hours and days channeling your energy doing something more useful and meaningful to one than to spend it on getting rid of a habit.
Understanding this disease is meaning that you have to revolve your whole life and activities around it. Not only are you troubling yourself and your body but are giving out this smoke to those who are involuntarily becoming passive smokers because of your addiction.
Children are vulnerable to popular images and this may be the reason why the tobacco companies uses images that can deliver to the audience an impression that smoking is a cool habit. What they do not spell out is that it can bring a lot of health issues for you, shorten your lifespan and at the same time make it difficult for those that are close to you and deprive them of a healthy life too. Being an adult means not only making choices for your self but also taking responsibility for the choices one makes. Making responsible choices is what adulthood is about. Once you start smoking it is very difficult to get rid of that habit and if you are trying to quit then it will be a struggle for life. So if a teenager is planning to start smoking then he or she should be made aware of not only the health hazards but also aware of the host of other issues that come with this addiction. This may be a means for them to make responsible choices.
