The human body has a delicate balance and a self sustenance mechanism that helps it repair any damage that is caused due to the daily wear and tear. There are other repairs that the body does on itself like after a surgery from which it can recover over a period of time. If the damage is due to some thing like inhalation which a self is destructing mechanism being forced on the system the body weakens in its wake and can lead to health problems. Smoking is one such habit that debilitates the body’s functions.
The lungs are made up of small air sacs that interchange oxygen and carbon dioxide with the blood capillaries. This exchange is controlled by the walls of the alveoli that regulate it. Smoking can damage this delicate function and render them inflamed causing the lungs to enlarge and causing a mechanical disadvantage to the chest.
Chronic bronchitis is another leading problem smoker’s face because of the presence of inflammatory cells in the air passages which obstruct them and cause disruption in the breathing process. These thickened airways also cause inflammation and enlargement of the mucus producing cells in the air passages and that can lead to excess mucus to enter the lungs resulting in cough.
COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a resultant condition of smoking. There are other forms of emphysema that may not be related to smoking and may stem from the work place and some times may also be due to genetic predisposition like familial emphysema. Most cases of this condition are from smoking and that destruction this has on the lungs and air passages.
