Success rate with quitting cold turkey

December 18th, 2007 · No Comments

One of the first methods a person adopts when trying to quit smoking is the cold turkey method. In this method the smoker quits suddenly without any gradual phasing out. This is the most common or first step method that quitters start off with but is probably one of the least successful. The cravings hit hard and it is really difficult to cope up with the pressure. The phasing out method still provides the brain with controlled doses of nicotine which are gradually reduced, but with the cold turkey method the approach is rather drastic and the cravings come in full scale with extreme symptoms.

While this method is probably not the best option for successfully quitting there are ways in which you can make it work for you. The cravings are the hardest in the first few days. So to counter them simple tips like drinking lots of fluids to flush out the toxins from the system, diverting your attention to something else or concentrating on the purpose of quitting can help when the cravings really hit hard. Taking support from family or support groups can help to some extent and trying to keep busy so that your mind does not wander back to your cravings is another trick.

Whatever the trick maybe it finally rests on how badly you want to get rid of the habit and while the first few weeks are hard, as the nicotine levels in the body reduce so do the cravings. If after a while it does not seem to be working then you can try using therapeutic nicotine to ease the cravings and slowly go into the total quit mode. To be able to make this method work one needs willpower and the desire to quit completely. It can be successful only depending on how badly you want to quit.
