Secondhand smoking can affect children adversely. Secondhand smoke is a combination of the smoke given out by the burning cigarette as well as the smoke exhaled by the smoker. This smoke clings to clothes and furniture and contaminates the air. Most of the chemicals have hazardous effects on the health of the people in the vicinity, but apart from that there are over 43 of these chemical compounds that are released that are known to cause cancer.
The effect of secondhand smoke need not be emphasized it is hazardous to everyone but more so with children who have a developing immune system and are more susceptible to infections and respiratory problems when exposed to this contaminated air.
Pregnant woman who smoke affect the organ development in the growing fetus thus injuring the chances of delivering a healthy baby. Maternal smoking is related to various problems like low birth weight, premature births, developmental defects like cleft palate, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), poor lung development and respiratory issues, like wheezing and cough, and poor lactation in the mother.
Exposure to this smoke in the early years can also lead to respiratory tract infections, ear infections, more susceptibility to pneumonia and bronchitis and so on. Children are known to have developmental disorders when they are exposed to maternal smoking at a tender age and this may translate to behavioral problems or performance problems at school.
Children are also at a higher risk of developing cancer. The best method is to try and avoid your child from being exposed to secondhand smoke and in turn ensuring that they are healthy and away from the effects of cigarette smoke.
