Tips to keep your teenager smoke free

December 18th, 2007 · No Comments

Children are impressionable. The bill boards, the media and the peer pressure can result in your child starting to smoke. Smoking that starts early is likely to continue for a lifetime and the younger the start the harder they are hit with health issues. Most of the children who start early end up with health issues like cancer, lung problems and heart disease. With all the media information and the pressures of their social circles it is imperative that kids start smoking. But this can be avoided if they know what they are getting into. Talking to your child and arming them with the information that is necessary for them to say no to the first cigarette can be vital for them. This could well be the fine line between being a smoker and a non-smoker.

While trying to give the child information it is good to work at their level and try to portray things that make sense to their world. There are a lot of things that go with smoking, addiction, health issues, social issues, creating situations like second hand smoking and causing health issues for those around you and so on. Let the child know the effects of nicotine. It can get into your blood stream rapidly and then into your brain leading to chemical changes that can result in harmful cravings. The habit is also associated with other diseases like cancer of the lung and if you chew tobacco then cancer of the mouth and tongue. It is a major cause of ear infections, hearing problems, bronchitis, emphysema and pneumonia. Not only does it bring a host of health issues it also carries with it a bad odor that seems to cling to a person and not leave no matter how many times one may shower or use any number of deodorants.

Apart from all these issues smoking releases a lot of chemicals like carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and much more. It is just like pumping your body with these chemicals for the sake of a few minutes or seconds of euphoria which is short lived anyway.

Children that come from a smoke free home are more or less bound to remain smoke free. It is simply a case of them modeling after their parents. So if you are trying to emphasize on the need to avoid smoking then it maybe good to start by quitting smoking before you tell the child about its hazards.

If your child is already smoking then try and work with them to help them rid themselves of this habit. Make sure that they are acknowledged for their efforts and are commended while they are on the road to quitting. It means a lot for the child to know that you are taking part in this effort and that you are working with them. That in it self could be a motivator. Involve them in activities and events that will need total concentration so that they do not get the urge to smoke. Make it a team effort so they know that you are supporting them and are there to help when they need it. It makes them feel secure and more confident in doing what they are doing.
