Understanding why smokers cannot stop smoking

December 18th, 2007 · No Comments

Many people learn how to smoke and get hooked on to the habit. Trying to quit is not as easy. There are a lot of people who are trying to quit smoking and have not been successful. The reason for this being that nicotine which is one of the ingredients of tobacco is addictive and when one stops smoking the brain craves for its daily nicotine dose.

Cigarette smoking is one of the easiest from of delivering this addictive drug to the brain. Each smoke inhalation releases nicotine to the brain in as little as 10 seconds. The easy access to this drug for the brain alters its chemical structure and it starts craving for more and hence a person tends to get hooked to it and finds it hard to kick the habit.

As the dependency grows it tends to become a part of the routine like your early morning cup of coffee and thus makes it an automatic routine for the person to perform even without thinking. Since this becomes a force of habit after a while that the brain craves, when one is trying to quit it is a battle to fight the cravings for nicotine. The trick is that you have to overcome your withdrawal symptoms and at the same time change your behavior to choose what is best for your health.

Most smokers understand the need to quit and know all the affects that smoking has on their health but almost all of them even with the intention of quitting finally succumb to the cravings and their will power caves at some point of time. Understanding that the process of smoking changes the brain chemically and knowing that the need to smoke stems from this alteration and the need to satisfy this craving can be compelling.
