What is a stop smoking injection and how does it work

December 18th, 2007 · No Comments

If working with other methods has failed to help you quit smoking and you are looking for something that can alleviate the cravings for nicotine then taking a shot may be the answer.

Like the stop smoking medication Chantix and Zyban there are two FDA approved stop smoking injections that can help a person stop smoking. To quit smoking is basically to stop giving the body the nicotine that it craves for.  Most of the medications that are available work by blocking the nicotine receptors in the brain and help relieve the cravings.

The stop smoking injection blocks the nerves that produce the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. When this is done the brain does not get any signals about the drop in the nicotine supply. This in turn will turn off the severity of the withdrawal symptoms in the first few days of quitting when they are actually the hardest. The drugs used in the injections are Scopolamine and atarax.

It takes about 4 days for the body to rid of traces of nicotine and about 14 days for the acetylcholine in the brain to come back to normal levels. Once the injection has been taken it has to be supplemented with a scopolamine patch or an oral medication which will continue the work done by the injection but at a lower concentration.

The treatment can account for the physical need to change but may not be a permanent solution as it has no significant help in the psychological aspect of treatment. Therapy or other forms of help may also be needed to accompany this form of treatment.
