What is secondhand smoking and how does it affect the passive smoker

December 18th, 2007 · No Comments

You do not have to be a smoker to get all the health problems that a smoker has. It is enough to just be around a smoker to get at least a fraction of the smoker’s health problems. Passive smoking or second hand smoking is equally hazardous.

Also known as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), it is the involuntary inhalation of the smoke that a smoker lets out.  Smoke that is exhaled out lingers in the surrounding air for a considerable amount of time and if inhaled involuntarily for a period of time that too can lead to cardiac, pulmonary, and respiratory diseases.

Secondhand smoking can cause cancer, premature death in infants and adults that do not smoke. While all forms of tobacco consumption is bad, smoking is especially hazardous to children. It can be the cause of premature death in infants and also known to cause Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Children who are exposed to passive smoking have more ear infections, respiratory tract infections and a higher risk of developing asthma.

Even the secondhand smoke is known to carry about half the chemical compounds that smoking gives out and hence is equally hazardous.
